Here you can read about Podengo Portugues

In the FCI-standard for this breed, you can find these words:
Very lively and clever, unassuming and robust

…a wonderful description of a wonderful dog!

The Podengo Portugues comes, as the name clearly states, from Portugal. Mostly in the northern region of the country has this breed been treasured and used for centuries. The miniature, known as the Pequeno, has been used for hunting rabbits. Podengo Pequeno and Medio are very bright and clever dogs with a natural talent for hunting. For this reason, this breed is also known in some places as the “Rabbit-dog”. But the breed is very versatile, and has from the beginning been used for other purposes like watchdog and family pet.
Describing the breeds movement, the standard says: Swift and light-footed

The Podengo Portugues is the national breed of Portugal. It is a very old breed, but it is difficult to say much about the origin of the Podengos.  It is most likely that he, like most spitztype dogs in the Mediterranean area, descents from the primitive types from the area today known as Egypt, Israel and Arabia. The Podengo Grande still has many similarities with the elegant primitive dog from Egypt known as the Pharaohound.

The Podengos had several jobs and were therefore made in several variations. FCI recognizes 6 variations – 2 types of coat and 3 sizes in each type. The Podengo Grande is between 55-70 cm high. The Medio is 39-56 cm high and weighs between 16-20 kilos. The Pequeno is a little handy dog with only 20-30 cm in height and about 4-5 kilos of weight.
The breed is categorized as one of the few hunting-breeds with primitive type. It can be found in group 5 (Spitz and primitive types) under section 7 (primitive types – hunting dogs without working trial).

Podengo Portugues Pequeno, the small Podengo, is very suitable as a family pet and it can adapt very well to most situations. The Podengo Pequeno adapts easily to apartments and to the city as well as country living.  The Podengo breed has not yet been manipulated so that it is extensively free of any genetic defects. The Podengo maintains a great resistance to diseases and demands very little maintenance.  The Podengo is a happy, attentive, agile, friendly as well as fearless dog. It is easy to keep, only barks occasionally, is very attached, and friendly with children and other dogs. It requires exercise and attention and likes to play. It is a very fast learner.
